Launch of our pilot project

In January 2019 we launched our pilot programme of therapeutic sessions with local primary school children. Six children aged between 8 and 11 visited us this week as we opened our doors for the first time.

huckleberries provides a safe place for children to just be themselves, bond with the animals and each other, learn yoga and mindfulness techniques, try out new things and play in the outdoors whilst they develop friendships.

Feedback from our first session was better than we could have imagined, and seeing the children snuggled under blankets and eye pillows in the nurture tent, cuddling the rabbits and playing together at the end of the day made us realise that what we have is special.

“the most brilliant day of my life” “the best yoga I have ever done” “the animals are really special”

School staff reported children “bouncing with joy as they told me about it” and a parent commented that their child who usually struggles to go to sleep had slept well for the first time in ages.

Through a series of six half day sessions that we have developed with our volunteer team of well-being practitioners and school emotional literacy support staff, we interweave yoga and caring for the animals to help each child develop their self-awareness, resilience, self-esteem and life skills so that they can adjust the way that they think about and react to daily challenges in a positive way.

We are presently seeking grant funding to offer further places to children beyond our pilot project.
